Electric Vehicle Charging
By 2020, 5-10% of cars are expected to be electric
The last four years have seen a remarkable surge in demand for electric vehicles in the UK – new registrations of plug-in cars increased from 3,500 in 2013 to more than 166,000 by August 2018 (source: Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, July 2018). There has also been a huge increase in the number of pure-electric and plug-in hybrid models available in the UK with many of the top manufacturers in the UK now offering a number of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of their model range.
A business with 1000 employees now has an average of 8 employees with an electric car. By 2020 the same business can expect between 40 and 100 employees to be driving an electric car.
Exciting times, with many hurdles to overcome
The electrification of the transport system presents a massive challenge and a massive opportunity to planners, the government, the National Grid and to businesses.
The challenge is to provide enough easily accessible and universally compatible charging points on the back of an already over-stretched national grid.
The opportunities are there for businesses to cut fleet costs, earn income from charging, improve employee retention, reduce their carbon footprint and improve their green credentials.
