Zestec is funding and managing a landmark 21.5MWp solar programme.
This project spans four Refresco manufacturing sites, including an 8.5MWp installation expected to become the UK’s largest solar PV system on a single continuous roof.
Making more of existing roof space
A sizeable rooftop solar project at Refresco’s Bridgwater manufacturing facility is set to establish a new benchmark for commercial and industrial solar in the UK.
The 8.5MWp installation will feature more than 18,000 high-efficiency solar modules and is expected to generate approximately 7.5GWh of renewable electricity each year. Once operational, the system is expected to generate electricity equivalent to around 17% of the site’s annual electricity demand, creating a significant source of onsite renewable power.
The Bridgwater installation forms part of a wider 21.5MWp solar programme including four of Refresco’s UK manufacturing facilities. The projects demonstrate the potential for energy-intensive businesses to transform existing roof space into a valuable source of renewable electricity.
A long-term energy solution
GB NRG has been selected to deliver and install the project whilst Zestec fund and manage the solar infrastructure over the long term. With over 10 years of experience working with commercial and industrial businesses we add value to businesses like Refresco by contributing to their broader energy transition through funding and delivering a long-term renewable energy infrastructure.
The projects will be delivered through our Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), backed by funds managed by Octopus Energy Generation. This model enables Refresco to access the benefits of onsite solar generation without having to fund the infrastructure itself.
By generating more electricity at its own facilities, Refresco expects to reduce its reliance on grid-supplied power, support its sustainability objectives and have long-term energy cost certainty.
For manufacturers operating large facilities, this approach offers a proven route to expanding renewable energy generation while preserving capital for other business priorities.
Delivering solar at manufacturing scale
Installing a solar system of this size on a live, 24/7 manufacturing facility requires careful planning and coordination. The project team must account for the operational demands of the site, protect roof integrity and maintain high standards of health and safety throughout construction.
GB NRG is responsible for developing, designing, engineering and installing the four-site programme, bringing together the technical expertise needed to deliver complex, large-scale rooftop solar. Zestec provides the long-term funding and asset management and optimisation, helping bring the technical and commercial elements together.
The project is set to become a landmark example of how large-scale rooftop solar can support the evolving energy needs of UK industry.
